Tips to Prevent Basement Flooding

Water can cause more damage and have longer lasting consequences than most people realize. With the snow/melt/rain cycles we’ve been having, water in the basement has been one of the most commonly called about problems we’ve received in the past several weeks. There are some steps that can be taken to lessen the likeliness or, at least the amount of water, that may find its way
  • Make sure gutters and downspouts are clean and clear of obstruction. This time of year, shovel away any snow that is blocking the downspout’s end.
  • Note that downspouts should direct water at least 6 feet away from the foundation.
  • Make sure the grade slopes away from the foundation. Land tends to settle over time and it may settle towards the house.
  • Trim dense shrubs that are next to the foundation so that the soil can dry as quickly as possible.
  • Make sure garden borders and mulch do not create a situation where water is actually held in place next to the foundation.
  • Install clear, plastic domes over window wells.
  • Make sure the sump pump is plugged in and working. A battery back-up is good to have in case of a power failure.
  • Make sure the interior drains are accessible and clear so that if water does come in, it has a place to drain away and out of your house.
If water does enter your building or home, don’t delay responding to the situation! Beginning water damage mitigation immediately results in less damage and lower repair costs. If you find yourself with a water damage situation, feel free to call us for help: 414-774-3799, anytime.

We Are Proud to Announce: Kelmann Has Won the Phoenix Award!

Each year, the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) selects -through a rigorous judging and evaluation system – a restoration company that exceeds all entries in the Innovation in Restoration category. This year’s winner – and there’s only one winner – is Kelmann Restoration, for our Fire damaged coridoor restoration of Saint Alphonsus Church in Greendale, Wisconsin.
Just before Christmas in 2011, Saint Alphonsus experienced a fire that affected the church as well as the school. One of the biggest challenges was to get mulitiple levels of the school, including more that one dozen class rooms, back in service on a very tight schedule. We had about 2 weeks to thoroughly clean, sanitize and paint before the students returned from Christmas break. Students were not delayed returning to school, and, we eliminated the need for students to continue school into summer break, saving time and money for the insurance company Saint Alphosus after photo and the church.
